The in-depth results of the International Passenger Survey (IPS) published earlier in October 2017 showed both inbound and outbound tourism continued to grow. The number of overseas resident visits to the UK in the first six months of 2017 increased by 9.3% to reach 19.2 m visits. Similarly, the number of UK resident visits overseas increased by 6.1% to reach 33.9m visits in the half year to June 2017.

The inbound and outbound growth was also reflected in an 13.7% increase expenditure for inbound tourism and 7.7% increase in expenditure in outbound tourism.

The International Passenger Survey (IPS) collects information about passengers entering and leaving the UK, and has been running continuously since 1961. The IPS conducts between 700,000 and 800,000 interviews a year of which over 250,000 are used to produce estimates of Overseas Travel and Tourism.

Interviews are carried out at all major airports and sea routes, at Eurostar terminals and on Eurotunnel shuttle trains.
