‘Benchmarking efficiency to remain competitive’

WHO: An international vehicle manufacturer

The client is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of cars, motorbikes and engines with manufacturing facilities in the UK, which have good production efficiency records. The company was planning to build a new factory to be able to meet future increased demand for its products.

WHAT: Research and analysis into the construction of one of their competitor’s new plants

Our client wanted to know and understand all the parameters that were taken into account for a new plant constructed by one of its closest competitors. Additional research and analysis on the expected efficiency of their production line and logistics system was crucial for the client to make sure they were heading in the right direction for the preparation of the construction of their new plant.

WHY IRN: The ideal combination of skills necessary for online research and telephone interviews with high level executives, plus a professional approach to a commercially sensitive investigation

The methodology used was based mainly on telephone interviews with the competitor’s managers and staff. This was enhanced by further contacts with businesses involved with the commissioning and the operation of the competitor’s plant. Additional desktop research on national and international databases, and the Internet was undertaken.

THE RESULT: Data presented to the client enabled strategic decision making on certain aspects of the plant construction and future operation

A report was presented to the client that contained a summary of the results of the telephone interviews, further enhanced by data retrieved from online searches. The report served as a useful tool for important decision making in the construction of the firm’s new plant.
